October 2020 Updates
We are very pleased to share our concept drawings and an update on our project to date. Our architect, builder and committee have worked hard and shown immense dedication to the process. The regulatory, licensing, and funding requirements involved in designing a multipurpose/daycare building are exceedingly complex, resulting in many iterations and input phases into the plans. We are proud to present what we believe will be an ideal facility for our community's needs, now and into the future.

In the architect Mark Hamilton's words, "the design of the Family Place recognizes that our most important community members (our children) deserve a healthy, light-filled environment that has a strong connection with the natural environment of Mayne Island. Nestled in the forested area at the western edge of the site, the design recognizes the importance of looking downhill toward the backdrop of forest at the northern  end of the site. This important connection with nature is achieved through the large north facing windows of the built form and is the dominant view from most of the spaces within.

The building plan was generated through a need to achieve an efficient layout with a central core service area around which the main functional areas of the facility are organized. The plan had to be simple, and flexible allowing the interior spaces to change over time as the daycare demographic and community needs evolve."
We also had input from our smallest up-and-coming designers, who offered the following design concepts. Notice the spiral window, round door, "big kid room" and the prominence of the diaper changing spaces -- this is truly purpose-built!
Look out for details of our pandemic-friendly ground breaking ceremony coming soon!
