July 2022 Update

Lots of little happy dances have been witnessed around the Early Childhood Society in the past two weeks after the install of the prefabricated wall and roof panels of the Mayne Island Family Place. After two years of planning, waiting, worrying and planning again, we are thrilled to see construction resume with a bang! The Family Place will more than double our current capacity for service provision, as well as offer space for school-age care and multipurpose functionality. The vision for this important community amenity is coming into focus as we see the building take shape at the Community Centre grounds. As for a completion date, we are aiming for somewhere between a jack-o-lantern and a Christmas tree. Stay tuned.

What makes this project extra special is the effort, enthusiasm and cooperation of so many people and groups. This was nicely illustrated when, during a visit to the construction site by the daycare children, three-year-old Mona shouted up to one member of the crew on the roof; “Good job working with your friends, Dad!!” If all of the work being done to raise good humans pays off, we can anticipate a bright future for our community here on Mayne Island.

Meanwhile, the little-daycare-that-could is in full summer mode! Each day after some inspired play, the group sets out in the choo-choo to find adventures in Mount Parke, or to tend to the learning garden in the neighbourhood, or to do story walks at the Community Centre (with a peek at construction!). There are Community Bus trips planned to beaches and farms, and we even had presence at the music festival with kid zone activities and a rest space for naps and nursing. As we anticipate moving into our new home with great excitement, the Early Childhood Society is again on the hunt to expand our staff team. Please, if you know someone interested in the magical world of early childhood education, send them our way.

Watch for events and opportunities for your young one, being developed by our newly revitalized Programs Committee. So far there have been swimming lessons and a family picnic, and new ideas are in the works. And finally, if you have a talent, skill set, idea or time on your hands and want to help with either the Family Place project or MIECS programs, please be in touch.

We had input from our smallest up-and-coming designers, who offered the following design concepts. Notice the spiral window, round door, "big kid room" and the prominence of the diaper changing spaces -- this is truly purpose-built!
Architect: Mark Hamilton, Ratio Architects
General Contractor: Chris Wolfs, Porchlight Homes
