October 2020 Updates
We are very pleased to share our concept drawings and an update on our project to date. Our architect, builder and committee have worked hard and shown immense dedication to the process. The regulatory, licensing, and funding requirements involved in designing a multipurpose/daycare building are exceedingly complex, resulting in many iterations and input phases into the plans. We are proud to present what we believe will be an ideal facility for our community's needs, now and into the future.
In the architect Mark Hamilton's words, "the design of the Family Place recognizes that our most important community members (our children) deserve a healthy, light-filled environment that has a strong connection with the natural environment of Mayne Island. Nestled in the forested area at the western edge of the site, the design recognizes the importance of looking downhill toward the backdrop of forest at the northern end of the site. This important connection with nature is achieved through the large north facing windows of the built form and is the dominant view from most of the spaces within.
The building plan was generated through a need to achieve an efficient layout with a central core service area around which the main functional areas of the facility are organized. The plan had to be simple, and flexible allowing the interior spaces to change over time as the daycare demographic and community needs evolve."

Check out our home away from home for the summer! Although we are still based and licensed at the school, we plan on spending lots of time at our new home at the community centre. We've even pitched a nifty new nap tent complete with shade sails and a handwashing sink! Our daily field trip will help us celebrate our future family place building, as well as fulfill our COVID-19 safety plan by spreading out and being in the fresh air.
Major thanks to those who helped make it happen! We are an awesome community.

May 21, 2020 Announcement
The Mayne Island Early Childhood Society (MIECS) has received a grant from the Provincial Government’s Childcare BC New Spaces fund to build a new community facility on Mayne Island. The MI Community Centre Society has leased out a parcel of land on the Centre grounds behind the tennis courts for the construction of a multi-purpose building. The new space will host an expanding number of childcare spaces, including an infant/toddler program and an after-school program for school-aged kids, as well as the existing multi-age program currently housed at the Mayne Island school. Programming for children and families of Mayne Island will also be possible through the Family Place facility, which will be legacy amenity for the community for generations to come.
Architects Sean McEwen and Mark Hamilton and General Contractor Chris Wolfs have been retained to provide design and construction of the site. The Early Childhood Society is convening a committee of community representatives to provide guidance to carry out the build, and is committed to providing as much local labour and trades opportunities as possible for the completion of the project. This project will include many opportunities for community partnerships, and many individuals and groups have already lent their support to make this grant possible.
The Childcare BC New Spaces fund provides funding to create new licensed child care, helping families access affordable, quality child care and strengthening communities across British Columbia. Through the fund, the Province is providing 90% of the total project costs to the MIECS. The CRD has generously provided Community Works funding for much of the remaining costs of the new facility.
Given the current pandemic and related circumstances, all parties are engaged in developing plans that meet the most recent health orders and keep Mayne Islanders safe. More details of the project and its development will be released in the coming weeks.
